Modern Sustainable Bio-energy Schemes as Instrument of Rehabilitation of Arid Areas
Mankind is facing very challenging and vital problems. In the past: food availability; at present: clean energy; in the future: water availability and arid lands recovery for food and bioenergy production. In degraded, semi-arid lands, assuming water is in any case available, the caution introduction and sustainable exploitation of well selected, dedicated crops (like sweet-sorghum), processed by means of modern bioenergy complexes and efficient, clean technologies, will have very positive effects on The recovery of land (through progressive soil fertility improvement by high volume yearly input of organic fertilizers (compost) The supply of a wide variety of products (source of income for recovering at least part of the cost) like: -food: cereals, liquid sugar; -animal-feed for meat-milk production; -energy: heat/cool, power, bioethanol, biogas, charcoal, etc. Commodities that all represent vital elements not only to match the essential and comfort needs of local population living in remote sites, but also provide a wide range of modern clean energy products, which constitute the fundamental engine of development and for the improvement of the quality of life or I.
