Sandy Desertification in Northern China
With the development of economy and society, desertification exerts increasingly profound influences on the natural environment and the social development and has attracted widespread attention of international communities. China, as one of the countries facing with severe desertification problems, has made some progresses in understanding and combating desertification through many years of hard work. Sandy desertification research in China has experienced several decades of arduous efforts, along with the establishment and development of Chinas desert science. Researches in this field have made great contribution to development of Chinas national economy and the development of Chinas desert sciences. This paper defines sandy desertification as land degradation in arid, semi- arid and part of sub-humid regions mainly resulted from interaction between irrational human impacts and fragile environment. The author focuses on presenting the major progresses and achievements in sandy desertification research in China over the last 40 years, including fundamental study, the causes, developmental processes, damage assessment, monitoring and assessment of sandy desertification, vegetation succession, plant physiology, impacts of sandy desertification on ecosystem, high-effective use of water and land resources and sustainable development in sandy desertified regions, desertification control models and techniques etc. The author suggests that the key fields of desertification research in China in the future should be the blown-sand physics, process of sand storm, ecology of desert environment and sandy desertified region restoration, water and land resource utilization and agricultural sustainable development in sandy desertified regions, desertification reversion and control models, etc.
