Primary Teachers Perceptions of Learner-centre Approach in English Language Teaching in China: A Preliminary Survey Study

This study is based on a small-scale survey investigating Chinese primary teachers perceptions and interpretations of the concept of learner- centredness in English language teaching. Although the notion of learner-centredness has existed in the field of education for a long time, what centring on the learner really means is not easy to define and it has caused a considerable amount of confusion among educators as well as teachers. The main purposes of this study are: 1) To investigate the beliefs and attitudes towards learner-centrednss held by primary teachers of English in the Chinese teaching context; 2) To find out the characteristics of learner- centredness identified by these teachers; 3) To find out how these teachers views their own approaches to teaching, learner-centred or teacher-centred, and why? 4) Finally to find out about the benefits and difficulties perceived for implementing such an approach to English language teaching in Chinese primary schools.
