Researchers and teachers of English as a foreign language have, on the whole, been minimizing code- switching and creating an all-English environment in the English language classrooms. Yet code-switching is found to be very popular in the English Department of Hebei Normal University. The teachers either switch from English to Chinese or from Chinese to English, to achieve better communication or relationship with the students. In this research, classroom code-switching of four teachers were recorded and transcribed for analysis. Besides, the teachers were interviewed for their motives of the code-switching, and 10 students from their classes were also interviewed for their comments on the code- switching made by their teachers. Pedagogical and social functions have been found during the transcript analysis and interview responses. In conclusion, teachers code-switching in the classroom is both beneficial to language teaching and to the teacher-student relationship.
