Cultural Influence in Chinese College English Classrooms
There is a stereotypical view that Chinese students are reticent in English class. The primary factor is believed to be the negative influence of Confucian tradition of rote learning. However, Confucian notion of learning involves creativity and critical thinking. At the same time, western culture affects the present day younger learners. The ethnography done in this paper indicates that there are non-cultural factors for the passive interaction in class: teaching methodology, teacher attitudes and assumptions on English teaching as well as learner beliefs on FL learning. Inadequate language proficiency also influences learner response. The cultural deterministic view on Chinese FL learner behavior needs to be revised. To activate students in class requires more effort from researchers and teachers.
