Measurement and Calculation of Human’s Voice Separation Ability and NIRS Analysis of Brain Activation

Recently, research on cognitive science has accelerated. In audition, human can separate and comprehend a certain voice from simultaneously spoken voices. This ability correlates with brains auditory cognitive ability and can reflect the brains health status. We proposed a quantitative measurement method and a calculation model of the voice separation ability by using pairs of Japanese vowels. Through measurement experiments of 72 subjects at different ages, the relation between age and voice separation ability was investigated, and the validity of measurement method and calculation model were proved. Moreover, to investigate the brain activation area and status when human separating voices, a near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) analysis was carried out. The quantitative change of cerebral hemoglobin concentration was measured and analyzed. Consequently, this measurement and calculation method is considered possible to be applied to prevention and early-diagnosis of cognitive deficits.
