Ultimate Bearing Capacity of Suction Bucket Foundation in Undrained Soils

With the development of extensive oil and gas fields, alternative foundation types are being employed to take place traditional systems for offshore facilities, such as gravity foundation, skirt foundation, towards design in increasingly deep water and hostile loading environments. As it is economic and repeatedly usable, the bucket foundation has attracted much attention of oil companies in recent years. It is supporting the vertical loading such as the sea platform and weight itself. Therefore, the mechanism of interaction between foundation and soil and performance of such foundations under vertical load are one of the key fundamental issues in design and construction of bucket-foundation- supported offshore platforms. However, scholars have been in a puzzle about the bearing mechanism and failure mode of this structure under vertical load especially the complicated interaction between the structure and the soil. Based on its performance and upper-bound limit analysis of plasticity, a new combined 3-dimensional failure mechanism of bucket foundation in undrained soils against vertical loading is established and the limit analysis model of bucket foundation subjected to vertical load is proposed. And it is verified by a comparative study with finite element solutions by use of finite element analysis software ABAQUS. For bucket foundation, a number of parametric computations are conducted. The numerical results computed by the proposed method will be helpful in engineering practices.
