Bearing Capacity of Soft Soil Foundation of Dikes in Yangtze Estuary under Wave Load
During a strong storm, some of the caisson structures of the guiding dike in Yangtze Estuary were suffering a great amount of extra settlement. Dynamic triaxial results show that serious strength weakening of the subsoil was taking place during the strong storm. The residual undrained strength is only 36% of the initial one. Hansens formula was adopted to estimate the bearing capacity of the soil foundation of the guide dick before and after the storm.Calculation results show that with the initial soil strength, the safety factor is near 2.0, while the safety factor will decrease far below 1.0 with the residual strength, which can explain dick failure. The test results also show that the ability of the soft clay to resist the wave force will be greatly increased when the soft soil samples were suitably improved. Based on the test results, an improvement method associating vertical drains with surcharge loading was proposed to strengthen the foundation soil. The calculation results indicate that after a proposed soil improvement, the soil strength will be increased by two times of the initial strength, which give a safety factor of bearing capacity much greater than 1.0 even the soil weakening is considered.
