Influence of Surcharge on Active Earth Pressure with Seepage

Influence of surcharge on active earth pressure acting on vertical retaining wall by a backfill subjected to steady water seepage is investigated using Lagrangian Analysis of Continua (FLAC) in present paper. The wall provides with a drainage system along the soil-structure interface, and the soil is cohesionless and fully saturated to the ground horizontal surface. Firstly, the computation of the active earth pressure without surcharge acting on the surface of the backfill is performed using the FLAC. Comparison of the computing results and those published solutions shows good agreement, so that the method is feasible to calculate active earth pressure. Then, computations of the active earth pressure with three surcharge cases of different values and/or distributions are performed. Three cases of surcharge distribution, which are infinite uniform surcharge, concentrated surcharge and local uniform surcharge, are investigated.Finally. the influence of surcharge on active earth pressure is analyzed by comparing numerical results.
