Experimental Study of Electro-Osmosis in Kaolin Clay

Electro-osmosis appears to be an effective technique for dewatering and consolidation of clayey soils such as mineral waste tailings and dredged sediments. In this study, electro-osmosis in Kaolin clay was investigated to monitor the change of various parameters during the consolidation process. A laboratory-scale apparatus was developed, and the electrical current, effluent flow, as well as voltage, pH value and moisture content were measured at different positions of the soil column with different density. The test results showed that the direction of electro-osmotic flow was from the anode to cathode, and the density of soil samples pay a significant role in effluent flow rate, resistivity and electro-osmosis coefficient. The resistivity near electrode increases much faster then inner soil sample. The remarkable reduction of moisture content in soil sample was observed during electro-osmosis process.
