Optimization of Hydraulic Containment Systems
Hydraulic containment systems are commonly used for preventing further spreading of the contaminated groundwater on the fields, however, few of them are optimized. In this paper, a basic research was conducted to understand some basic rules on optimization of a hydraulic containment system. A two-dimensional numerical model was developed to represent a typical VOCs contaminated site, well pumping rates and locations were optimized for hydraulic containment purpose. The results show that using a combination of three wells could reduce the total pumping rate by 13%~20% compared to the case where only one pumping well is permitted. Moreover, optimization results show that hydraulic conductivity has a near linear relationship with the optimal total pumping rate. These results would facilitate the process of seeking optimal strategies for hydraulic containment systems.
