Separation of L-Ribose from L-Arabinose Using a Continuous Counter-Current Ligand-Exclusion Chromatography
For the separation of L-ribose from L-arabinose, simulated moving bed (SMB), a form of a continuous counter-current chromatography, was employed. The jacketed glass column (2.5 cm I.D. × 19.7 cm bed-height) packed with Dowex 50WX4 (Ca 2+ form) was used at 50oC. Single-step frontal analysis was performed to estimate the adsorption isotherm parameters of L-ribose and L-arabinose. The experimental results showed that the adsorption behaviors of L-ribose and L-arabinose were competitive Langmuir isotherm model. With the estimated isotherm and kinetic parameters, the SMB process for the separation of L-arabinose and L-ribose was designed and simulated. SMB experiments were carried out to confirm the simulation results.
