PVA pervaporation membranes for esterification of trifluoroethyl methacrylate using trifluoroethanol and methacrylic acid
New poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes were prepared via thermal crosslinking reaction between PVA and ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE) and were used in the pervaporation-combined esterification of trifluoroethyl methacrylate(TFEMA) using trifluoroethanol (TFEA) and methacrylic acid (MA). The PVA membranes with different EGDE content were characterized using DSC and swelling tests. The PVA membranes prepared showed better acid-resistance than those crosslinked with gluaraldehyde. The basic pervaporation properties of the membranes with different EGDE content were investigated for TFEA/water and MA/water mixtures, and pure TFEMA as a function of operating temperature. The esterification of TFEA with MA using the PVA membranes was also carried out and their pervaporation properties were analyzed as a function of reaction time.
