Mass transfer study in single droplet accompanied by hydrolysis reaction of carboxylic esters
The transient mass transfer in a single droplet system consisting of cyclohexanol (continuous phase)/ aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (dispersed phase) was investigated in the presence of chemical reaction, which is alkaline hydrolysis reaction of carboxylic esters, methyl chloroacetate(MCA) and ethylacetate(EA). For the case of MCA, both mass transfer and the chemical reaction seem to have almost same magnitude of contribution to the transport process. The experimental results showed good agreement with simulation results for MCA hydrolysis. Dimensionless analysis of experimental and simulation results using Sh vs. Fo plot was established and compared each other, which showed good agreement in the experimental range. The enhancement factor which is defined as Sh(Da 0)/Sh(Da=0) increases with Fo after onset of reaction inside droplet until it reaches its maximum value and decreases again due to depletion of reactant inside the droplet.
