C4 olefin/paraffin separation by adsorption process
Displacement desorption process is being considered as a promising alternative to the energy-intensive distillation process for the separation of olefin/paraffin mixture because of its easy operation and low investment cost. A displacement desorption process was applied for the separation of olefin from C4 olefin/paraffin mixture and its performance was investigated with experiment. Experimental set-up for this study included three adsorption beds filled with olefin selective adsorbent and two distillation columns for C4/desorbent separation. The feed used in this study was C4 hydrocarbon mixture produced after removing 1,3-BD and iso-butylene from the raw C4 hydrocarbon mixture of the typical naphtha cracking process. The performance was affected by the amount of the desorbent and C4 olefin rinse. As the amount of the desorbent increases, both the purity and recovery of olefin was increased. This is attributed to the fact that higher purity olefin is obtained at later phase of the desorption step. As the amount of rinse increase, the product purity increased at the expense of the recovery.
