A New Model for gold cyanide adsorption based on the properties of activated agricultural wastes

This study was conducted to establish the potential of agricultural wastes as precursor for preparing low cost adsorbents for gold cyanide complex. Hard shell of apricot stones and pistachio nut were activated in this study by chemical activation using phosphoric acid solution. A mathematical model, which correlates the effects of carbon properties on the adsorption behavior, was developed to produce a basis for tailor making the adsorbent potential for this particular application. The developed model suggests carbon properties of alkali pH, high total surface area, small pore diameters and high content of carbonyl group which is required for optimum adsorption capacity. These results are encouraging and confirm the potential of activated agricultural wastes as gold cyanide adsorbent.
