Synthesis of chitosan-g- carboxymethylcellulose ion exchanger by graft copolymerization and their adsorption properties Cu2+ and Co2+ from aqueous solutions
The high nitrogen content of chitosan is the mail reason for its ability to sorb metal ions through several mechanisms including ion-exchange or chelation. Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) is used to grafting chitosan copolymer through linkage between amine groups of chitosan and carboxyl groups. The effects on adsorption capacities such as amount of chitosan, degree of substitution of CMC, reaction temperature, value of the initial solution and adsorption time were investigated. The adsorption experiments demonstrated the CMC-g-chitosan template has high adsorption selectivity of heavy metals in solution containing single heavy metal ions. Finally, we studied the adsorption mechanism by FTIR spectra.
