Effect of chemical reactions on oxygen flux through ceramic membrane

A one-dimensional steady state dense membrane reactor model and a non-linear regression method are used in this paper to study the effect of chemical reactions on oxygen flux through a ceramic membrane. Results show that the phenomenon that the oxygen flux of oxygen-permeation membrane could be greatly improved with chemical reactions, which was reported frequently in the literature, can be attributed to two main reasons. One is that the changes of the membrane surfaces by the chemical reactions improve the surface exchange kinetics and the other is that the lower oxygen partial pressure at the reaction side because of the consuming of the oxygen by the reactions increases the driving force of oxygen permeation.
