Metallic foams to remove particles from hot gases

One of the most complicated tasks in the field of hot gas cleaning is the particle removal from a complex mixture of thermal treatment products. A robust and completely reliable technology has not been yet developed to achieve high efficiencies 1. Significant improvements have achieved in gas cleaning technologies in the past few years. Nevertheless, no process has ever been tested successfully 2, 3. The aim of this work is to perform the filtration of particles generated in fluidized bed gasification experiments using metallic foams. The gasified material used is dried sewage sludge. Metallic foams are cellular materials that have good strength-to-weight ratio. The Nickel-Chromium metallic foams could have inherent good properties for use in structures where strength, high temperature resistance and corrosion resistance are required. Moreover, metallic foams are characterized structurally by their cell topology, relative density, cell size and anisotropy. In hot gas filtration, high temperature-resistant metallic foam have an important function. In the present work, several experimental operating conditions (time heating, temperature, washing methods and metallic foam thickness) are investigated. The pressure drop in the metallic foam during the filtration is mathematically determined. The experimental results obtained are compared with numerical simulation results and a good agreement is obtained. The metallic foams are replicated from tomography results and a model has been created.
