Optical investigation of membrane structure

The roughness and the porosity of membranes are two important parameters. In order to study these parameters several optical methods were used. With the SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) pictures, the membrane cut-off given by the manufacturers are verified. The experiments using optical profilometer and AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy) show that the determination of the membrane roughness is continuous whatever the observation scale. Moreover the AFM experiments performed on surfaces of 5 μm x 5 μm show that the membrane roughness increases with the membrane cut-off. The laser multi-rays scatterometer, used in high resolution mode, has revealed an evolution of the optical response with the cut-off.
