Effects of acid additives on structure and performance of PPESK membranes

PPESK ultrafiltration membranes were prepared using N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) as solvent, oxalic acid, maleic acid and fumaric acid as additives respectively. Phase inversion via immersion precipitation was employed for manufacturing of membranes. The effects of three kinds of acid additives concentration on the thermodynamic and kinetic properties of the casting solutions were investigated, and the relationship between membrane structure and performance were discussed. The exchange rate of solvent and nonsolvent increased along with the increase of oxalic acid and maleic acid, and therefore it resulted in an increase in pure water flux, but the changes of BSA rejection were different because of the difference of surface pores. The presence of fumaric acid in the casting solutions declined the pure water flux and BSA rejection due to the increased porosity of membranes and decreased gelation rate.
