Separation Technique using Optimal Cooling Curve with Metastable Zone Prediction in Cooling Crystallization Processes

For efficient separation by cooling crystallization, the crystal size has to be large and its distribution narrow. The purity of product and washing cost are related to crystal size distribution. To achieve the objectives, the metastable zone and the optimal cooling curve have to be demonstrated. Metastable zone is that the region in which not nuclei generate but crystals grow up. If the supersaturation can be maintained within the metastable zone, bigger and narrow crystal size distribution can be obtained for seeded crystallization. Optimal cooling strategy which keeps the reactor temperature within the metastable zone can be obtained using metastable limit model. Model of metastable limit is expressed as 1st order dynamics with nonlinear output to cooling rate. Optimal cooling curve are obtained using optimization technique not to violate the predicted metastable limit by model.
