Fault Rideh-through Performance of Wind Turbine with Doubly Fed Induction Generator

The high penetration of wind power generation brings new challenges for its integration into the network. The disconnection of large amount of wind power will result in serious consequence to the grid. In this paper, the performance of the wind turbines with doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs) during a voltage dip caused by an external short-circuit fault is studied. A crowbar solution is introduced in order to protect the converter from destruction. The stator side converter acts as STATCOM to compensate the reactive power during the fault. A simulation model developed in PSCAD/EMTDC is presented. Simulation results demonstrate that the wind turbines can restore to normal operation under the specified control scheme.
