Enhanced Ginsenoside Production in Ginseng Hairy Roots by Antisense Suppression of Cycloartenol Synthase Gene
Antisense suppression of cycloartenol synthase (CAS) gene was employed to improve the ginsenosides level in hair root of Panax ginseng. Transgenic ginseng hair root lines with suppressed CAS expression were obtained by introducing a transgene expressing antisense coding region (0.9kb) of CAS cDNA under the regulation of the 35S CaMV promoter. The resultant transgenic hair root had reduced levels of CAS mRNA and higher levels of ginsenosides. Suppression of CAS also suppressed the growth of ginseng hair root to some extent.
