Real-Time Measurement of Soil Shear Profiles with Distributed Optical Sensing Probe
Conventional measurement strategies of liquefied soil shear response to ground motions requires involve bulky and costly arrays of sensor bundles. In this work, an optical fiber with multiplexed fiber Bragg grating strain sensors is bonded to highly-flexible metallic strip, which is inserted vertically through the soil. As the soil is sheared due to horizontal ground motion, the strip bends, resulting in strain. The strain-to-displacement conversion is done via planar linear and nonlinear elastic bending models. This approach was tested and verified as viable in an experiment on a shake table subject to scaled earthquake ground motions.
