Fibre optic pressure sensor for geotechnical applications
In geotechnical and civil engineering, the measurement of parameters such as pore water pressure is of importance for diagnosis and monitoring of soil conditions and hence the infrastructure associated with it. A fibre optic pressure sensor based on the transverse loading of a sub-section of a fibre Bragg grating (FBG) for geotechnical applications is presented in this paper. When a load is applied to a sub-section of an FBG, a spectral drop-out is generated in the reflection spectrum, which exhibits a red shift in wavelength as the load is increased. A pressure transducer that allows a real-time measurement of pore water pressure using this technique is presented. A pressure measurement range of 300 kPa and a 0.66 kPa resolution was obtained when using a l pm wavelength resolution tuneable laser to interrogate the sensor.
