Improvement of Spatial Resolution in Strain Measurement with BOTDR by Analyzing Strain Distribution Curve
Brillouin Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (BOTDR) has many advantages to be used in structural health monitoring for strain measurement. But its application in structural monitoring is severely restricted due to its spatial resolution limit of 1m. In order to improve the spatial resolution in strain measurement with BOTDR for accurately obtaining the strain within a length less than 1m in sensing fibre, a method based on strain distribution curve (SDC) analysis is proposed in this paper. For BOTDR, the SDC is generally derived by Lorentzian fitting to the received Brillouin backscattering spectrum. A model describing the SDC is built firstly. Then the strain distribution in fibre can be obtained by fitting the SDC using the model. The spatial resolution in strain measurement with BOTDR is improved to 0.1m by analyzing the SDC in our experiment.
