Estimation Approaches for Average Link Travel Time Using Multi-source Data

To estimate Average Link Travel Time(ALTT) accurately and quickly, both the loop data and GPS data were used. When using loop data, the piecewise time homogeneous Poisson process was used to describe the process of the arrival and departure of vehicles on the link. The Markov queue model was used to calculate the queue delay time. When the GPS data were used, the sample mean and order statistic was used corresponding to the large sample number and small sample number. When fusing the two estimation result,the different methods were used according to the sample number of GPS data. Actual estimations using loop data and GPS data show that the approaches can provide the right outcome. The estimation errors are low. The estimation methods for average travel time on link can be used for such practical applications as traffic control and management, route guidance, traffic state analysis and so on.
