ADVANCED AND SPEICALIZED LABORATORY FACILITIES FOR SOIL TESTING-THE STATE OF THE ART
This paper introduces seven advanced and specialized laboratory facilities for measuring the stress-strain-strength behaviour of soils and physical modelling, that is, (1) a large-size direct shear box for measurement of strength parameters of granular soils and interface between geosynthetics/cement grout/structure and soils, (2) a computer-controlled GDS triaxial system with capabilities of stress-path control, 2Hz cyclic loading, Ko-consolidation, both compression and extension testing, and measurement of Gmax using bender elements; (3) a Hollow Cylinder Apparatus (HCA) for measuring the behaviour of a hollow soil specimen under a condition of pure shearing, plan strain, or rotation of middle principal stress, etc., (4) a new Double Cell Triaxial System (DCTS) for continuous measurement of the volume change of an unsaturated or saturated soil specimen in triaxial testing, (5) a Truly Triaxial System (TTS) with an innovative loading device for measuring the behaviour of a brick-shaped soil specimen under independent control of three principal stresses (or strains), (6) an innovative soil nail pullout box with full instrumentation, and (7) a plane-strain foundation model.
