JAPANESE EXPERIENCES ON SEISMIC STABILITY OF GEOSYNTHETIC-REINFORCED SOIL RETAINING WALLS
Focusing on seismic performance of geosynthetic-reinforced soil retaining walls, relevant case histories on their seismic behavior and their applications as retrofit work after the earthquakes in Japan are summarized. Based on model test results, the mechanism for mobilization of seismic resistance is compared between reinforced soil walls and conventional type retaining walls. The effect of combined use of cement-treated backfill and a new design code of geosynthetic-reinforced soil retaining walls for railway structures in Japan are also overviewed.
