PERFORMANCE-BASED DESIGN AND IN-SITU TESTING FOR SPREAD FOUNDATIONS
In light of the shift to performance-based design, the Specifications for Highway Bridges (2002 Edition) specifies foundation-scale-related corrections to calculations of ultimate bearing capacity. In light of this, this study first aimed at surveying and describing how foundation scale affects the ultimate bearing capacity. Second, a loading test using a large plate was conducted to verify the ultimate bearing capacity of soil with a spread foundation and to examine methods for estimating soil parameter values. The test was done in soils typical of spread foundations, namely soft rock ground, gravel ground and crushed rock ground.
