STUDY ON STABILITY OF NATURAL SLOPE CUTTING WORK

During the course of slope cutting construction on a natural slope or after the construction,a failure plane of variable slope angle will be developed. According to results of centrifugal model tests and in-situ tests, there are two failure patterns for such a slope. One has a failure plane starting at the top of slope, and the other starting at the surface of slope.Upper-bound excavation depths for the two failure patterns have been calculated with upper-bound method, respectively. With comparison of the two Upper-bound excavation depths under the same conditions, occurrence conditions of the two failure patterns are discussed and determined, hence (1) the limiting excavation depth, (2) the safety factor when the designed excavation depth is less than Upper-bound excavation depths, and (3) the soil pressure when the designed excavation depth is more than the limiting excavation depth, can be calculated. Our work will provide some guidance for the stability design of slope cutting work constructed in natural slopes.
