STUDY ON VARIANCE OF UNDRAINED SHEAR STRENGTH FROM CONE PENETRATION TEST AND LABORATORY TEST

Cone penetration test (CPT) which has many advantages compared to other in situ test is carried out to confirm the variance of undrained shear strength (su) of alluvial clay existed in Japanese coastal area. To evaluate the variance of su, coefficient of variation (COV) of su ratio i.e. investigated field data/calculated mean value, are used. Based on the distribution of COV of the ratio, the variance of su obtained from direct shear test (DST) and CPT is considered to be small compared to qu/2.
