LARGE DISPLACEMENT NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF DEEP PENETRATION OF SQUARE FOOTINGS INTO TWO-LAYERED SOILS
The Remeshing and Interpolation Technique with Small Strain(RITSS)approach has been developed to simulate the continuous penetration of square footings into double layered soils. Remeshing is automatically accomplished by ANSYS program. The Unique Element Division method is used to interpolate stress variables and material properties after each remeshing. The soil profile is set up as a stronger soil layer overlaying a softer one, with the strength ratio (bottom soil strength/top soil strength)varied from 0.1 to 1.0. The importance of large displacement analysis for this problem is illustrated by comparing the small and large displacement predictions. The bearing capacity factors are given for various cases involving different strength ratios of two clay layers. The development of the soil displacement mechanism is also discussed.
