DYNAMIC THERMAL BUILDING ANALYSIS WITH CFD – MODELLING RADIATION

In an attempt to reduce the high computationalefforts for dynamic thermal simulations usingComputational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) the authorshave recently developed an adaptive freeze-flowmethod (I.e. freezing of flow equations over variabletime periods). This paper documents the work thathas been carried out to predict the radiative surfaceheat transfer in dynamic thermal building processesusing CFD.The Monte Carlo and Discrete Transfer radiationmodels were investigated and results compared withanalytical solutions. The Discrete Transfer model hasshown good performance whereas an unrealisticradiation distribution on the surfaces was observedfor the Monte Carlo model. A further investigation of the Discrete Transfer model for the cooling of a solidwall has shown that the adaptive freeze-flow methodis an efficient and accurate way to carry out dynamicthermal CFD simulations which involve radiation.
