EXPERMENTAL INVESTIGATION ON THERMAL DECAY IN AN UNDERFLOOR PLENUM IN SUMMER
The underfloor air supply plenum in an underfloor air distribution (UFAD) system has significant impact on the benefits of the system. In summer, heat transferred into an underfloor plenum mainly from the slab and raised floor panels creates thermal decay. The focus of this paper is to investigate thermal performance in an underfloor plenum by physical tests. The thermal decay in the underfloor plenum was affected by many factors, different plenum inlet air conditions and internal heat sources located in the test room on the plenum were investigated in this paper. The results show that the air temperature distribution in the plenum was not uniform. The effect of room heat sources on the thermal decay in the plenum is significant, about 40% of the heat in the room was transferred into the plenum under the condition of non-insulation of structural slab. Lower inlet air velocity caused more non-uniform of the air temperature distribution in the plenum. However, inlet air temperature had little effect on the fundamental shape of the temperature variation.
