SYSTEMS STUDIES OF VENTILATION CONFIGURATIONS INVOLVING AIR PURIFICATION AND ENERGY RECOVERY -- ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND IAQ

The purpose of this study is to investigate the method of determining the energy consumption used to condition ventilation air and the associated contaminant levels as a function of the outdoor air flow rate. Configurations chosen for the study were a school and office. Equipment configurations included economizer, energy recovery ventilator and/or air purifier options. Differential equations were solved to estimate contaminant and carbon dioxide levels. Building energy simulations were performed for New York using an hourly analysis program. Ventilation rates spanned the range from very low values, representative of the ASHRAE Standard 55 IAQ procedure, to very high rates proposed for green buildings. Specific configurations of air purifier and/or ERV were found to be beneficial in either saving energy or providing higher ventilation rates without increasing energy consumption.
