EMISSION RATES OF GAS POLLUTANTS FROM PORTABLE GAS RANGE AND NITROGEN DIOXIDE EXPOSURE ASSESSMENT IN RESTAURANT

A series of source tests were conducted to characterize the emissions of nitrogen oxide (NOx=NO+NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2) and total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) from portable gas range in steady-state condition using well-mixed chamber. Since the use of portable gas range is widespread in houses and restaurants in Korea, it is important to characterize the emission of air pollutants and suggest optimum ventilation rate. Ranges of emission rates of air pollutants from portable gas ranges were NO 0.551~0.939 mg/hr, NO2 0.354~1.080 mg/hr, NOx 1.207~1.631 mg/hr, CO 1.389~4.210 mg/hr, CO2 2426.823~2973.495 mg/hr, and TVOCs 0~0.119 mg/hr. Means of food service workers and customers exposures to NO2 by combustion of portable gas range in restaurant were 48.2 ppb and 64.7 ppb, respectively. Required ventilation rate to control the air pollutants from portable gas range was calculated as maximally 3.131 m3/hr on the basis of NO2 emission rate.
