MACRO-MICRO TWO SCALE MODEL OF PREDICTING THE VOC DIFFUSION COEFFICIENTS

A macro-micro two scale model of predicting the diffusion coefficient of porous building materials based on the micro structure analysis of the material and mercury intruding porosimetry (MIP) tests is proposed. Based upon the observation for the pore structure of some typical porous building materials, it is found that the diffusion coefficient of the material can be expressed by that of a representative elementary volume (REV) in which the pore structure can be simplified as the series connection of two scale pores, macro and micro pores, Different from traditional porous mass transfer model for diffusion coefficient in the literature, the present model not only considers the porous ratio etc., but also considers the pore size distribution and pore connection modes. In order to verify the model, a series of experiments for volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions of three kinds of medium-density board was conducted. The comparison of the model and experimental results show that: the present model agree much better with the experimental results than the traditional model in the literature. The present model is useful to predict the VOC diffusion coefficient of porous building materials and to “design low VOC emission building materials.
