CFD SIMULATION STUDY ON FORMALDEHYDE EMISSION FROM “WET MATERIALS IN A NEW BAKE-OUT METHOD

Formaldehyde has been recognized as a hazardous air pollutant, an odorous respiratory tract irritant, and a probable carcinogen. It is normally present at low level in both indoor and outdoor air. Many homes had high levels of formaldehyde soon after the building insulating for saving energy and being decorated. A numerical model was used to describe formaldehyde emission of building material from wet to dry. Then a UDF program was made as the boundary condition and coupled it with turbulence k- model in FLUENT to simulate emission rate and concentration distribution of formaldehyde. This model was applied to simulate the process of a new bake-out method, which reduces the formaldehyde level more quickly and efficiently. The principle of this method is to supply mechanical ventilation into the indoor space intermittently to eliminate formaldehyde when the concentration reaches a high level according to the baking effect. And as the temperature rises, more formaldehyde is emitted form the product.
