EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF MOISTURE BUFFERING EFFECT OF A NEW BUILDING MATERIAL

Hygroscopic building materials give substantial ability to the indoor relative humidity (RH) in rooms which are ventilated at less air change rate. This ability of a hygroscopic material to moderate indoor air variations in RH is known as the moisture buffering effect. This article describes the research on the moisture buffering effect of the sample of a new building material, which is developed on the basis of the traditional building material. In this paper, the moisture buffering performance of the new building material is measured by recording the equilibrium moisture content (EMC) of a test specimen when the air relative humidity is changed from 11.3% RH, 32.8% RH, 57.6% RH, 75.3% RH, and 97.3% RH. The main result from these tests is the sorption isotherms of the building materials that can be used to characterize the moisture buffer performance of a material. Furthermore, this paper gives experimental results of this new building material in a small enclosed space. The results obtained are then analyzed and the results show that the buffering capacity of the new building material is quite considerable.
