INDOOR AND OUTDOOR CONCENTRATIONS OF AROMATIC COMPOUNDS IN GUIYANG CITY, CHINA
Levels of benzene, toluene and xylenes in indifferent indoor microenvironments were investigated in Guiyang City, China. Totally, 110 sites were monitored from March 2004 to January 2005. Indoor benzene, toluene and xylenes concentrations were 0.037 ± 0.112, 0.109 ± 0.370 and 0.212 ± 0.534 mg/m3, respectively. It was found that the most ratios of indoor and outdoor for three pollutants concentrations were >1. The indoor and outdoor xylenes concentrations are significantly different. Toluene and xylenes concentrations were significantly higher in the residential buildings than in public buildings. All three compounds concentrations in office buildings are significant higher than other types of public buildings. The results of T tests indicate that living room and bedroom had higher toluene concentration than kitchen. The seasonal variation for aromatic compounds is not very large. Overall, aromatic compounds had the lowest concentrations in winter. Several factors that may affect the indoor aromatic compounds are discussed.
