RISK ASSESSMENT OF FORMALDEHYDE & BENZENE IN HOUSING IN HUNAN PROVINCE

The indoor air quality of housing in four cities in Hunan province, China is investigated in this study. Parameters such as air temperature (Ta), relative humidity (RH), formaldehyde (HCHO) and Benzene (C6H6) are monitored simultaneously indoors and outdoors. In this study, the formaldehyde and benzene are mainly studied. According to the IAQ survey results, the formaldehyde and benzene are found not comply with the China Standards. The maximum and average concentrations of formaldehyde are as high as 0.16 mg/m3 and 0.08 mg/m3, while the action level in China was 0.10 mg/m3, which was due to inadequate ventilation and various building materials in houses. The maximum and average pollutant levels of benzene are 0.17 mg/m3 and 0.03 mg/m3. The main source of benzene and formaldehyde is mainly from indoor environment. The surveyed concentration of pollutants indicates that formaldehyde and benzene exceed the national action levels, and the two pollutants are the serious carcinogenic matter from USEPA. Based on these survey results, both chronic non-cancer risks and potential carcinogenic individual risks assessment on two different groups of people are male adult and female adult, for lifetime exposure to the two pollutants have been estimated. The results show that all of the estimated Lifetime Cancer Probability (LCP) of benzene is not acceptable in four cities; all of the LCPs of benzene whose LCP is 1.047E-05 to 1.457E-04. is larger one or two orders of magnitude than that of the benchmark which is 1.0 E-06, According to USEPA, formaldehyde and benzene has carcinogenic effect on human beings, and the chronic health effects results are also affirmative. The most serious indoor pollutant is formaldehyde, whose highest LCP is as high as 6.304E-04, 630 times more than the acceptable benchmark.
