ANALYSIS OF RETROFITTING A FIXED-SPEED CENTRIFUGAL CHILLER WITH VARIABLE FREQUENCY DRIVE

As a centrifugal chiller is typically the single largest consumer of energy in a modern building, how to reduce the energy consumed by it has become the most interesting challenge to HVAC engineers. Among various energy saving methods for centrifugal chillers, installing a variable frequency drive (VFD) is advised by some experts. What presented in this paper are the discussions of retrofitting a fixed-speed centrifugal chiller with VFD to save energy, which is focused on the analysises of necessity, feasibility and economics of retrofitting. Meanwhile, some problems possibly encountered during retrofitting such as failure of motor, selections of throttling equipment and control methods, etc and the corresponding measures are presented in detail. It showes that retrofitting a fixedspeed centrifugal chiller with VFD is not only necessary, but also feasible and beneficial if the mentioned problems can be handled carefully. Analysis of the example also showes that the investment of retrofitting a fixed-speed centrifugal chiller can be paid pack in 2.5 years.
