Sustainable Design Strategies on Retrofit of Old Industrial Building in China

This article analyzed the actual situation of the retrofit of old industrial building in China, and proposed some sustainable design strategies. The article held that for architects, the sustainable retrofit of old industrial building should be concentrated on “outside-building envelope and “inside-the disposal of interior space. The aims of these strategies are to increase the potential of natural ventilation and daylighting, enhance the capability of thermal insulation, and reduce the building energy consumption. The retrofit of the building envelope includes the retrofit of door and window, roofing and external wall. The retrofit of the interior space should be carried out to satisfy the functional requirements. Reasonable disposal on the large interior spaces, full utilization on the high story height, setting the “buffer zone(such as corridor, balcony and atrium) are good measures to increase the potential of daylighting and natural ventilation and reduce the outdoor climate influence on indoor environment.
