THE SUSTAINABLE DESIGN STRATEGIES FOR BUILDING ATRIUMS

The atrium, as an all-weather public congregated space, is equivalent to the indoor city plaza and with more predominant conditions than the city plaza. The atrium is an artificial environment, and its function of ecological adjustment mainly is revealed in such ways as climatic adjustment and environmental improvement. As an indoor space, however, the atrium is rather great in volume and has many pieces of glass: on the one hand, it leads to a great amount of energy consumption; and on the other hand, it has the potential of passive cooling and heating. Therefore, much more attention should be paid to the ecological design of building atriums. By analysis of the physical characteristics of types and volumes of the atriums, the areas of the top glass, and materials of division walls, the authors brought forward in this paper the ecological design strategies for building atriums with a core integrated design method which combines light environment, thermal environment and IAQ.
