INFLUENCE OF BACKFILL IN BOREHOLE HEAT EXCHANGER FOR A GROUND COUPLED HEAT PUMP

The objective of this paper is to study the effect of backfill thermal conductivity on vertical ground heat exchanger performance. A numerical model for the simulation of transient heat transfer in vertical ground heat exchanger is presented. The influence of backfill on borehole heat exchanger is investigated. It can be concluded that the utilization of large diameter borehole heat exchanger with thermally enhanced backfill offer better system performance and the backfill thermal conductivity should be selected according to the local soil thermal properties rather than some certain value.
