MAGNESIUM IN AUTOMOBILES AND AEROSPACE
Magnesium has been used in the construction of automobiles and aerospace vehicles for many years. The unique combination of lightweight, strength, rigidity, damping capacity, dent resistance and high machinability has created interest in engineers and designers.This paper will review many of the past uses for magnesium in autos and aerospace. It will review past accomplishments for the benefit of the newer engineers and designers. It will also show that there have been many unusual and innovative uses of magnesium in the past practice.The automobile and aircraft industries were chosen since they have always been the main areas of attention for a light weight metal. This was true in the past and is true in the present. Several types of fabrication will be discussed in addition to casting, including rolling, extrusion, and forging.
