Population Density Surface Modelling in Changchun City
This paper presents Population Density Adjustment Model (PDAM) based population density surface modelling, taking into account the main factors affecting population distribution in urban areas to construct the PDAM and using the adjusted population densities of centroid points in each smallest population unit as sample points to interpolate population density. This method is necessary when there are no geographical coordinate data and population data for centroid points in each smallest population unit having large population. Taking Changchun City as a study site, PDAM was built through reclassified Euclidean distances to roads network, main shopping centres and reclassified buffer zones in the Central Sub-area according to its actual population distribution pattern. Final population density contour lines show that Changchun City is in a transformation period because its population density taking on a concentric structure with two population centres in the centre part and one potential population sub-centre forming to the southwest of the centre part. The nearer to the city centre, the higher population density. Moreover, model validation illustrated that this PDAM-based population density surface modelling is appropriate for Changchun City as well.
