Uncertainty in Temporal Geographic Information

Time has been studied in geographic information science since the early 1990s. The majority of researches focus on the representations of temporal geographic data, and data issue is understudied. Different from traditional geographic information systems (GIS) that represents states of the geographic reality at instants, temporal GIS work with temporal geographic information-change over intervals. Temporal geographic information is not error-free, no matter whether obtained from the field or derived from existing static data. Uncertainty exists in temporal as well as in static geographic data. Uncertainty and temporal representation are two research priorities identified by University Consortium for Geographic Information Science. Uncertainty in temporal geographic information is a subset of uncertainty in geographic data and processes. This paper reviews uncertainty and error propagation in geographic data and spatial analysis, and identifies those related to map overlay because temporal geographic information is usually obtained through overlay analysis. Next, it provides examples of uncertainty in temporal geographic information. This research will contribute to moving traditional GIS towards temporal GIS.
